The History Of New Holland Tractors For Farm Use

Monday, June 14th, 2010

New Holland tractors trace their linage back to 1895 where Abram Zimmerman purchased a one horse barn on the outskirts of New Holland, PA. From those humble beginnings the company has grown and through several mergers has become a world leader in the manufacture of tractors and other farm equipment.

In Zimmerman’s early work to provide gasoline engines with blocks that would not crack during sub-freezing weather. Once he created this engine, it was used in many ways on farms that operated where electricity was not available. Zimmerman’s farm engine allowed washing machines, saws, rock crushers and butter churns to be powered without electricity.

The depression of the 1930s was a difficult time for New Holland. The farmers that had been their customers did not have the money for such luxury items and sales dropped. The financial outlook for the company became very bleak until the development of the first automatic hay baler that also tied the bales of hay. Some historians say that this development alone saved the company from extinction.

The Sperry electronics company purchased the company in 1947. The name was changed to Sperry New Holland. The growth of the company allowed them to obtain a large portion of a Belgium combine company.

The company produced lawn equipment until 1974 when the lawn equipment portion of the company was sold to Ariens. About the same time, Ford motor company purchased Sperry New Holland and brought a wealth of engineering history to the company. The merger with Ford worked well, because up until this time, there had been little overlap in the product lines the two companies had produced. Later Ford sold the New Holland division to Fiat.

During the various mergers and other changes, the corporation acquired a construction equipment division. While the North American division of the construction equipment was sold later, it continues in other places in the world where New Holland is a leader in the production of construction equipment.

the company produces a wide variety of farm equipment in North America today. One of the main products in that line is tractors, but they also continue to produce haying equipment, crop production tools and implements for handling of materials.

The company provides tractors of all sizes. They manufacture very large tractors for use in large fields as well as smaller tractor designed for use by the small scale farmer.

Today New Holland is a leading farm machinery manufacturer worldwide. In the United States, the company ranks third while in Europe and parts of Asia and Latin America it is the leading supplier of farm machinery. Fiat New Holland has become a world company that affects farm practices worldwide.

While the New Holland company had a very humble beginning in a small blacksmith shop, today New Holland tractors affect agriculture on a worldwide basis. As Abram Zimmerman faced the successes and failures of an inventor working on a hit and miss engine, he probably never thought that his little company would grow so large in just over 100 years.
