Effective Decorating Techniques For Small Rooms

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Some say it’s impossible to decorate a small space. I beg to disagree. There are ways to revamp a room with limited space.

Start with color. Lighter hues are better for small rooms because they can make the room look bigger. Light colors reflect natural light and this creates an illusion of a bigger space.

Mirrors can also make a room look more spacious. You can hang a mirror on the wall or use mirrored tiles instead.

Since your room is in light color, make up for the lack of bold hues through your accessories. Choose colorful wall hangings, flowers, pillow covers and curtains.

Rugs offer another great opportunity to add color to your small space. Choose a rug that is round if your space is extremely small. You could also use a rectangular rug to elongate the room. Don’t be afraid of bold colored rugs. Rich colors or eccentric patterns add an element of surprise into your room and keep the space alive and vibrant. Don’t be afraid to choose an unusual rug as the focal point in your room. Rugs add softness to small spaces and keep them from feeling so sterile. Rugs are more important than furniture, wall hangings, or curtains when decorating a small space. Your design success is directly related to your rug choice, so invest in a beautiful one!

Arrange your furniture properly to avoid a crowded look. Use the appropriate size so that they don’t just fit but more importantly, they fit well. Have custom-made furnishings and multi-purpose items to save space. A storage ottoman for example, can be a coffee table while also being a chair. At the same time, it can help store items you have that would otherwise be crammed in some imaginary space somewhere.

Use some creativity and your small space will soon be alive with style. Remember to use neutral paint, bold accents, and beautiful area rugs to makeover your small space with big style.

Annuals For Outdoor Arrangements

Monday, March 30th, 2009

What can we plant in our gardens this spring that will insure plenty of material to fill our vases, bowls and other flower containers this summer? The answer is annuals. Annuals are probably used for cutting more than any other type of flower. They may be used alone or combined with perennial or shrub blossoms.

An annual is a plant which completes its life cycle in one year, or in one growing season. Plant it this spring, and it will bloom this summer – and no more. The term “annual” is also applied loosely to perennial plants which bloom the first year from seeds but do not normally survive low winter temperatures even though they are perennial in warmer zones.

Annual plants of a limited number of varieties may be purchased in the spring. For a much wider selection, seeds should be sown. Plant them at the proper time to insure good germination. Often this information is given in catalogs or on seed packets.

You will learn that sweet peas must be planted very early and in a place where they can climb on something. Seeds that volunteer freely such as annual phlox, larkspurs and China asters can safely be planted in latest fall or earliest spring. Zinnias, cosmos, and dahlias should not be sown until the ground warms up in the spring. For an early start, plant seeds such as petunias, dahlias and salvias in flower pots or boxes to grow in a sunny window until time to set them out in the garden.

If necessary, the growing plants may be a part of the general garden scheme. A better way is to have a secluded area set aside, such as a small shaded patio for a cutting garden. Here they may be grown in rows and the blossoms cut freely without thought of marring your garden designs. They may be cultivated easily with the hoe, and tended like a vegetable garden. The location should preferably be sunny.

A rich soil results in better plants which will produce better flowers. Compost, peat moss or similar material will help the soil structure and enable seeds to push through more easily than in a hard packed soil. After plants are up and growing, mulches such as dried grass clippings, hay or straw may be placed between the rows and around the plants to retain moisture, keep the soil from cracking or baking and discourage weed growth. After your annuls begin to bloom, keep the flowers picked. The more you pick, the more they bloom- and once you let them set seed, the flowers will cease to come.

Koi Pond Construction – Consider Professional Help

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

A project to construct a Koi pond is both a big project and one of the most enjoyable parts of being a Koi owner. Your Koi pond should be your own work of art and at the same time the perfect home for your fish. Plan carefully ahead of time.

If you have some construction experience and are handy at projects like this, you could choose to build the Koi pond yourself. If you decide to take on the project yourself, I suggest using a pond kit to help you get started.

Getting professional help with the project will certainly cost you more but may save you a lot of headaches in the end. Doing it yourself and using a pond kit can be cheaper but if you install it incorrectly, you will probably spend more in the end getting your mistakes corrected.

The biggest reason for doing the project yourself is getting it done the way you want. Building something that you created yourself will certainly allow you to brag to friends and family. Plus, such a project can be quite enjoyable if you like working outdoors with hands.

Also consider some of the disadvantages as well. Using a pond kit can make the project simpler but this comes with some limitations as well. For example, if you want to change the design or make the pond larger, the pond kit may not be easily adaptable to what you want to do.

When you planned your Koi pond the design was just what you wanted and had that unique look – just perfect for your garden. Once into the project you may find the need for special tools or equipment. Since you are not a professional the end result may not have that “professional” look or worse yet may have some hidden construction problems that will haunt you over time.

Hiring a professional contractor may not be the cheapest initially but in the end may be the best way to get your dream Koi pond. Remember, you are making a long term investment in your pond, so that added cost may easily pay off in the long run. Your Koi will happy as well in their new home.

One point that you should not forget when deciding if you are going to use professional help is that a Koi pond is a dynamic ecosystem, thus, it needs some interrelated and interconnected components that may be difficult to understand from an uninitiated mind. You must beware of cheap quotes, which could translate to disaster later on in the pond’s life. It is a permanent structure and should be as big as you can afford. Once constructed, you may not be able to add or change things unless you are prepared to spend more at a great inconvenience to yourself. So, you need to choose what may be the best, if not the least expensive, of all the materials needed.

Why Deck Retractable Awnings May be For You

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

If you have a deck in your garden then you will notice just how much everyone loves to spend time on it during the summer months. Barbecues are often enjoyed on the deck and it provides you with the perfect place to entertain friends and family. No matter what you use your deck for, sometimes in the summer months in particular it can get a little uncomfortable whilst you are out on it. Also the deck can start to fade because of the suns rays. This is when a deck retractable awning would come in extremely handy!

What Are Deck Awnings?

Deck awnings are ideal for blocking out the suns rays and for protecting your deck from overheating. They allow you to enjoy the summer weather without getting burnt and it makes it easier to entertain friends and family as you will all be a lot more comfortable. No matter what type of deck you have you will always be able to find an awning which is suitable for it.

You can choose from either manual or automatic awnings. Basically manual awnings are used by pulling a lever or a hand wheel which will then pull the awning out. Automatic ones on the other hand are controlled through electronic devices. However with the automatic awnings they also come with a manual override option just in case the automatic controls fail to work properly. This comes in particularly handy when the power goes off and you cannot control the automatic awning!

You will find that generally the two most popular types of deck awnings are canvas and aluminum. Now aluminum ones are used quite frequently and this is because they tend to be better at reflecting the light away from you and your property. However they can also cause a lot of noise when it rains and so some people prefer to have canvas awnings instead. Now canvas awnings also come in a wider choice of styles and colors. The only downside to canvas awnings in comparison with aluminum ones is that they do not last as long. So if you are looking for something which will last you for years to come then aluminum awnings may just be what you need. Or if you would prefer an awning which is a lot more visually appealing, canvas awnings should be what you opt for.

Overall awnings are excellent to have in any garden and they do come in a large variety of styles and colors. So if you do have a deck and you find that it gets too hot in the summer months, why not consider purchasing an awning? It will help to keep you cool and stop your furniture from becoming ruined also.

Repotting Orchids – Learn How To Care For Orchids and Their Pots

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

To start, you need to get a new pot for your plant. You need to prepare this pot properly, or your time spent repotting orchids will be a waste! If you are recycling an old or used pot, soak it in a little bleach and water mixture. Once it is thoroughly soaked, rinse it and give it a efw days to dry out. You want it totally dry before you proceed. If the pot is brand new, just soak it in water for a little while.

You aren’t quite done with the pot yet. You need to add some plastic foam peanuts or small pebbles at the bottom of the planter. This makes sure your newly repotted orchid gets enough moisture.

Well, your orchid is ready for the big move now – right? Just turn the orchid upside down and gently tap on the sides of the pot. Sometimes the roots will stick to the side of the pot. Be careful and get a butter knife to loosen the roots from the side. If you damage a few roots, it won’t kill your plant, but do be careful and gentle.

Give your plant a gentle shake to loosen and drop off the dirt attached to the roots. Often some clumps will stay behind. Don’t worry about that – just be gentle and careful with your orchid while you are repotting it.

Repotting orchids is a great time to do a little below-the-earth care of your orchid. You need to take a little time and trim off any of the dead and rotting roots. You will know which ones are dead by the brownish color and mushy feeling. The healthy roots are white and firm. Once you have trimmed the roots you can place the orchid in the newly prepared pot.

As you are repotting orchids – make sure that you look at the new growth. You want it facing outward. You need to give the roots some room to grow.

If there is growth extending all directions, place the orchid in the middle of the pot. Pack your potting mix firmly around the orchid’s roots. The roots should be totally covered with dirt.
